Andre Onana gets shock pay day as he agrees to leave Manchester United in transfer

Andre Onana has agreed to leave Manchester United for Trabzonspor on loan, talkSPORT understands.

The Cameroon international was keen to stay and fight for his place, but a move to Turkey is now set to be completed.

talkSPORT understands that Onana will earn more at Trabzonspor than he does with United due to the signing on fee and bonuses.

The goalkeeper is also understood to have asked for a pay rise at Old Trafford this summer.

talkSPORT reported that United were waiting on his decision after verbally agreeing a deal with Trabzonspor, with the Turkish transfer window open until September 12.

Now the goalkeeper has said yes to the proposal from the Turkish Super Lig club.

The Red Devils sealed the signing of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on Deadline Day, putting Onana’s future at Old Trafford in doubt.

It pushed Onana further down the pecking order after he failed to start the first three Premier League games, with Ruben Amorim preferring Altay Bayindir.

Onana’s sole appearance this season was the Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby, in which he was at fault for one of the goals.

The 29 year-old has struggled to impress since joining Man United in a £43.8million in 2023.

The former Inter Milan shot-stopper arrived with a big reputation.

The season before moving to Old Trafford, he played a huge role in the Italian giants reaching the Champions League final.

Erik ten Hag saw him as the man to revolutionise the way Man United played out from the back.

However, after some early mistakes, things never took off for the shot-stopper, who always publicly spoke about his desire to succeed.

With Ten Hag’s sacking, Amorim handed some opportunities to Bayindir.

An injury to Onana in pre-season is unlikely to have helped, and for the Red Devils’ opener against Arsenal, Bayindir got the nod.

Even once Onana returned to fitness, Amorim elected to keep the former Ajax man on the bench.

With Lammens now at Old Trafford, we could see Onana left out of the matchday squad if he decides to stay rather than head to Turkey on loan.

Onana’s exit decision

At the end of last season, Amorim defended Onana, saying he’d made more mistakes than the Man United goalkeeper.

It followed a 2-2 draw against Lyon in which he was at fault for two goals, and Amorim said: “If you look at the season I’ve made more mistakes than them during these last games and during these last months.

“There’s nothing I can say to Andre in this moment that will help him, so the most important thing is to be natural and then when the time comes I will choose the best XI to play. But I’m really confident in Andre.”

However, when asked why he didn’t play against Fulham, the mood had changed on Onana.

Speaking about his absence, he said: “It’s the same kind of decision a manager has to do.

“I try to see the game, I try to imagine the next game. I try to put the best players to win the game. So I did that.”

But with game time looking limited for Onana, he’s decided to go elsewhere.
