BMW PGA Championship 2025 Golf betting preview

Winning an away Ryder Cup has become harder and harder in recent times. Indeed, eight of the last nine have seen the home side triumph.

So with Europe playing away in New York later this month, skipper Luke Donald will want to see his team thriving in the build-up.

Rory McIlroy did just that with a thrilling playoff victory in his home Irish Open on Sunday and he’ll go for more glory in this week’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in Surrey.

This is the DP World Tour’s flagship event and 11 of Team Europe’s 12-man team (Sepp Straka sits it out for family reasons) have signed up to hone their games at Wentworth.

Six of Donald’s side form the top half-dozen in the betting with McIlroy the 6/1 favourite ahead of Jon Rahm at 7s.

Are any of Keegan Bradley’s Team USA making the trip?

The answer is no but there are two big-name Americans in the field and they both deserve respect.

Billy Horschel is the defending champion having also won this event in 2021 while Patrick Reed has made the top five on all three of his Wentworth starts.

Horschel, however, is coming back from a four-month layoff following hip surgery so it’s asking a lot of him, even if 70/1 seems tempting.

BMW PGA Championship 2025 Golf betting tips

🏌️‍♂️ Lowry looks great each-way value

Shane Lowry will have been slightly disappointed by his 15th place at last week’s Irish Open but he hit the ball superbly from tee to green.

Only a cold putter let him down but if he can get that right at Wentworth, the Irishman should contend here yet again.

Lowry’s record in this event is pretty remarkable. He won it in 2022 after several near misses and has made the top 20 in 11 of the last 12 years.

With the Ryder Cup on the horizon, the 2019 Open champ will be working hard on his game and there’s a decent chance it all clicks at Wentworth.

⛳ Back Shane Lowry each way at 25/1 with William Hill ⛳

🏌️‍♂️ Dean Burmester to outscore Matt Wallace

Matt Wallace cut a devastated figure in Switzerland last week after finishing runner-up and realising he hadn’t quite done enough to fulfill his lifelong dream of making the European Ryder Cup team.

And I can’t help but think he’ll suffer a hangover this week, especially with so much Ryder Cup talk in the air.

In which case I’ll back Dean Burmester at 20/21 with bet365 to beat Wallace in a 72-hole match bet.

Burmester was a winner on the LIV Tour (Chicago) last month and has previously posted ninth and 12th at Wentworth.

Wallace finished fast to claim 12th last year but before that his finishes here were 57-MC-MC.

⛳ Tip Dean Burmester to beat Matt Wallace at 20/21 with bet365 ⛳

🏌️‍♂️ Justin Rose for Top 10

Justin Rose has shown this year that he’s still very capable of flourishing on the big stage.

The Masters runner-up has a win at the St Jude Championship and a sixth in the Scottish Open on his last five worldwide starts and is worth a bet here to make the top 10 at 4/1 with Betfred.

The Englishman is a former runner-up in this event and has made the top 10 twice in the last six editions.

⛳ Back Justin Rose for a Top 10 finish at 4/1 with Betfred ⛳
