Bryant Gumbel Goes on Double Date With Al Roker After Hospitalization
Bryant Gumbel is enjoying time with family and friends after his recent hospitalization.
The former Today cohost, 77, and wife Hilary Gumbel joined Al Roker and his wife, Deborah Roberts, for dinner at Daniel Boulud’s La Tête d’Or steakhouse in New York, as seen in photos shared by Roker, 71, via Instagram on Thursday, October 30. In one photo, the group sat around their dinner table, while a second snap showed the foursome standing together and smiling for the camera.
“Dinner with good friends, @hilary_gumbel and Bryant Gumbel at the fabulous @latetedorbydaniel,” Roker captioned the post. “Great conversation and great food! Thanks, Elvir Dzananovic and @danielboulud.”
In the comments section, many fans expressed relief that Bryant is on the mend.

“I’m glad Bryant is doing better. I always enjoyed him on the Today Show. 💙,” one user wrote, while another fan added, “Glad to see BG looking and hopefully feeling better 🙏🏽.”
Hilary and Roberts, 65, both reposted the photos via their Instagram Stories.
“Perfect way to cherish the gift of good health! With @deborahrobertsabc and Al Roker,” Hilary wrote with a praying hands emoji and a red heart.
Roberts added, “Friendship is everything!”
Indeed, Bryant and Roker have a long friendship dating back to the former’s time on Today from 1982 to 1997. Back in June, Bryant presented Roker with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 News & Documentary Emmy Awards.

“So very proud yet humble to receive the @theemmys.tv Lifetime Achievement Award and given to me by a dear friend, Bryant Gumbel,” Roker wrote via Instagram at the time. “Having my brother, @christopher_roker and his wife, @hardyroker and @nickroker155 was meaningful. And congratulations to @debrobertsabc being inducted into the Silver Circle. Thanks, @adamsharpct for a terrific night.”
Bryant and Hilary’s double date with Roker and Roberts comes shortly after TMZ reported on October 21 that Bryant was hospitalized for a “medical emergency.” The former Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel host was transported from his apartment building in Manhattan to a local hospital after 9 p.m. the previous day, the outlet reported.
One of Bryant’s family members told the publication that he was “OK” but did not reveal further details about his health.
Hilary later took to her Instagram Story to share a photo of the sunshine peeking through fall leaves on a tree and wrote, “Gratitude.”
While it’s unclear exactly when Bryant was released from the hospital, he and Hilary were spotted walking through the streets of New York City on October 25. Bryant appeared to be in good spirits as the couple walked their dog.
Al Roker’s ‘Today’ Absence Explained: Where Is He This Week?
Bryant previously dealt with health issues, as he had surgery to remove a malignant tumor and part of his lung in 2009.
“It’s nothing to hide from,” he explained on Live With Regis and Kelly at the time. “They opened up my chest, they took a malignant tumor and they took part of my lung and they took some other goodies. And the pathology on most of the stuff had been benign, but enough aggressive cells had escaped the tumor that it warranted some treatment and I went through that and it’s done now.”
One year later, Bryant gave an update on his health.
“I’m still doing well,” he told People in 2010. “Doctors tell me I’m free and clear, so I hope for better times.”
