Canelo Alvarez splashes $3.8m on watches without batting an eyelid before Terence Crawford fight

Canelo Alvarez took some time out of his busy schedule to drop seven figures on some new additions to his growing watch collection.

The undisputed super middleweight champion treated himself to four new timepieces ahead of his upcoming clash with Terence Crawford on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Canelo is expected to pocket somewhere in the region of $100million for the super fight, and he spent a healthy $3.8million (£2.8m) chunk of it at the Jacobs & Co. Boutique in New York.

The Mexican superstar was visiting the luxury watchmaker to pick up his $500,000 (£433k) Jacob & Co. Opera Godfather when his head was turned by some other models.

He shelled out $900,000 (£666k) on one before splashing an extra $1m (£740k) on another.

That is when the salesman placed a $1.4m (£1m) watch on his wrist.

“I have $1.4million in my hand,” Canelo marvelled while flaunting the watch to his friends during episode 1 of the Netflix Countdown series.

“I want this one too. Right? It’s very hard to not say ‘give me that one’.”

How do Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford measure up against one another?

Crawford is set to move up two weight classes to challenge Canelo for his four major sanctioning body belts.

‘Bud’ made his super welterweight (154lbs) debut last August, beating Israil Madrimov on points for the WBA belt after winning world titles at lightweight, super lightweight and welterweight.

Canelo, on the other hand, is a natural super middleweight (168lbs), who has competed as high as light heavyweight (175lbs).

Despite the size disparity between the pair, a rehydration clause wasn’t added to the deal.

Here are Canelo and Crawford’s stats

The contractual agreement levels the playing field by limiting how much weight a boxer can put on between the weigh-in and the start of a fight through a second-day weigh check.

Yet Crawford and his team didn’t push for the stipulation.

“We don’t give a damn about that, you can only get so big,” Crawford’s trainer Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre told Ring Magazine.

“If you get too big then that is on him. I love Terence’s chances.”

Canelo regained his undisputed crown in May by beating William Scull for the IBF belt he relinquished last year.

The Guadalajara technician is riding a six-fight winning streak since suffering the second loss of his career to Dmitry Bivol.

However, none of those victories have come inside the distance.

In fact, Canelo hasn’t knocked out an opponent since Caleb Plant in November 2021.

The 35-year-old will be hoping to buck that trend when he comes up against his smaller foe this weekend.
