Dennis Schroder suspended for trying to strike Luka Doncic
The Los Angeles Lakers' 125-101 win on Dec. 28 over the Sacramento Kings seemed like a relatively uneventful one. They took control early and won each quarter, and they shot 52.8% from the field while forcing 19 Sacramento turnovers en route to victory.
But there was an incident after the game, even though not everyone knew about it at the time or shortly afterward. Kings guard Dennis Schroder, who had 11 points and seven assists off the bench, reportedly tried to hit Luka Doncic, and as a result, he has been suspended. The two exchanged some trash talk during the game, per ESPN.
"The NBA suspended Sacramento Kings guard Dennis Schroder three games Saturday for confronting and attempting to strike Luka Doncic after the Kings' loss to the Lakers in Los Angeles on Dec. 28," wrote Anthony Slater.
"Doncic and Schroder jawed at each other during various points of the Kings' 125-101 loss. During a timeout, Doncic taunted Schroder, telling him he "should've signed that contract" in reference to the four-year, $82 million extension Schröder declined from the Lakers a few years ago.
"Things appeared to cool off as the game ended. But Schroder left the Crypto.com locker room, spotted Doncic and tempers flared again inside the tunnel across from the home bench.
"Forty minutes after the buzzer, Schroder went after Doncic, telling Doncic that he can't call him a [expletive] on the court and pretend everything is fine off the court. The NBA ruled that Schroder attempted to strike Doncic.
"Lakers center Deandre Ayton tried to drag away Schroder from the confrontation while a stunned Doncic attempted to exit as security intervened.
"Schroder was eventually escorted to the team bus as Kings coach Doug Christie and several teammates sought answers about the sudden drama."
It just so happens that the Lakers will play the Kings at Crypto.com Arena on Monday — sans Schroder, of course. Los Angeles has lost two games in a row, and it fell apart in crunch time on Friday against the Milwaukee Bucks, leading to a 105-101 defeat. It has a 23-13 record and is in fifth place in the Western Conference.
