England obliterate ODI record with win over South Africa

England have made cricket history by smashing the record for the largest margin of victory in an ODI against South Africa.

They won by an astonishing 342 runs in their men’s one day international series match at the Utilita Bowl in Southampton.

Brydon Carse caught the ultimately decisive effort from Corbin Bosch to send England into the history books.

The triumph against South Africa is the largest ever margin of victory by runs in ODI history.

It has smashed the previous record set by India in January 2023 when they won by 317 runs against Sri Lanka.

Among the stars for England was Jacob Bethell as he scored his first ever professional century.

The 21-year-old was on hand to hit 110 runs from 82 balls as his side delivered a crushing 414-5 scoreline with 50 overs played.

Bethell has also become the second-youngest centurion in an ODI for England after David Gower.

Brook praises outstanding England performance

Captain Harry Brook spoke after the storming victory and lauded his teammates for such a stunning display.

“The ultimate performance. We were awesome with the bat, put them under pressure all the way through that innings and the bowling just speaks for itself, really.”

He added: “Yeah, definitely [a blueprint for England’s batting]. If we get in on good surfaces like that there’s no reason why we can’t get 400-450 each time we bat with our line-up.

“We’ve got seven top-order batters, it’s the blueprint and the template we want to use going forward.

“Jacob is very good against spin and especially against left-arm spin so it means they have to hold one of their main threats back longer.

“It’s something we’ll probably keep doing in the future but not necessarily every game.

“Joe and Jos have been doing that for years now. Rooty is phenomenal, just amazing to play alongside and then Jos can take any team apart.

“It was awesome to see Jofra bowling rockets there. To have that in your side, it’s quite frightening.”

South Africa won the opening two ODI’s earlier in the week by seven wickets and five runs on Tuesday and Thursday respectively.

And although they’ve won the series 2-1, it’s England who have made the headlines on home soil.
