Former Barcelona coach outlines plan for Racing to beat Hansi Flick – ‘Stick together and judge very well’
Barcelona’s upcoming Copa del Rey meeting with Racing Santander carries added emotional weight for Quique Setien, a figure whose personal and professional history connects deeply with both clubs.
For the veteran coach, this match is a moment that brings back memories spanning decades.
Setien’s bond with Racing runs especially deep. Before becoming a manager, he was a key figure on the pitch for the side, even captaining the team during one of its most iconic nights.
Reflecting on the draw, the former midfielder admitted he secretly hoped for this pairing. “I’m happy with the draw, I was hoping for it,” said the former Barcelona manager, according to SPORT.
He also revisited one unforgettable moment from his playing days, adding, “Of course, I remember it.
“Perfectly, I’ve seen it many times. And the goal I scored with my head. And Esteban’s goal,” a reference to Racing’s famous 5-0 win over Barcelona in 1995.
About the match
Despite the emotional pull of the occasion, Setien remains unsure whether he will attend the match in person.

He explained that his habits have changed in recent years and that he does not want to make the game about himself.
“Maybe I’ll go, but I think I’ll stay at home, because I don’t go very often lately and I don’t want to show up there just because Barça is coming.”
From a footballing perspective, Setien offered a thoughtful breakdown of what Racing must do to compete.
Drawing on his experience, he stressed the importance of discipline and bravery against a side like Barcelona.
“I think everyone knows more or less where you can hurt them and where they are going to hurt you, that Barça is always going to hurt you.”
He then explained the key tactical demands, stating, “That said, the players have to be very committed in defence, stick together and judge very well when to come out.”
For Setien, possession remains non-negotiable against Barça. “Keep the ball as long as possible, because if you give Barça the ball, you’re dead. The more possession, the more options,” he said.
