Former NFL Star Antonio Brown in Custody on Attempted Murder Charge: Report

Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown is back in the United States and in police custody as he faces an attempted murder charge, according to TMZ Sports.

Brown, 37, is expected to be charged with one count of attempted second-degree murder with a deadly weapon after he allegedly tried to shoot and kill a man outside a celebrity boxing match in Miami, Florida, in May.

TMZ reports that Brown was in the United Arab Emirates, allegedly trying to evade U.S. authorities. Brown was reportedly extradited from Dubai to the New York area, where he was turned over to police. He will soon head to Florida to face his charge.

Video of the incident surfaced earlier this year, appearing to show Brown fighting with several people outside the event. An arrest warrant for Brown stated at the time that a security guard stepped in to break up the fight and Brown allegedly took his gun.

Witnesses say Brown was the one who fired the shots that are heard off camera in the video. Two shell casings were found at the scene, but Brown was unarmed when police detained him.

Zül-Qarnaįn Nantambu is named in the warrant as the individual that Brown allegedly fired at.

“Cell phone video obtained from social media showed Mr. Brown with the firearm in his hand advancing towards Mr. Nantambu on the outside sidewalk,” the warrant read. “The video captures two shots which occur as Mr. Brown is within several feet of Mr. Nantambu. The video also captures Mr. Nantambu ducking after the first shot is heard.”

Though no arrests were made at the time, Nantambu later told police he believed one of the bullets may have grazed him. The arrest warrant states he had “visible injuries,” and he said he was treated at a local hospital.

Brown took to social media the next day, where he insisted he was trying to defend himself from several people who were trying to rob him.

“I was jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm to me,” he wrote via X on May 17. “Contrary to some video circulating, Police temporarily detained me until they received my side of the story and then released me. I WENT HOME THAT NIGHT AND WAS NOT ARRESTED. I will be talking to my legal council and attorneys on pressing charges on the individuals that jumped me.”

Brown played in the NFL from 2010 to 2021, spending nine of his 12 seasons with the Steelers. He was named to seven Pro Bowls during his career and was a four-time first-team All-Pro. Brown won his only Super Bowl as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2020 season.

He has also had several notable run-ins with the law. In 2018, he was accused of throwing furniture out of his 14th-story apartment window and nearly striking a 22-month-old child. The family sued and reached a settlement with Brown the following year.

Later in 2019, his former trainer Britney Taylor filed a lawsuit accusing him of rape. Brown denied the allegations and reached a settlement with Taylor in 2021. He also pleaded no contest to a felony burglary with battery charge in 2020 after he allegedly attacked a moving truck driver at his home. In 2022, he was arrested but did not face charges after a woman accused him of throwing a shoe at her.
