Goalkeeper collapses and dies moments after saving penalty

There were horrendous scenes in Brazilian futsal when a goalkeeper tragically died seconds after a match-winning penalty save.
Antonio Edson dos Santos Sousa was playing for amateur team Sind Motos and stopped a powerful shot by making a save with his chest.
The 34-year-old went to celebrate with his teammates, but then fell to the floor and panic set in as medics were called over.
It’s reported that Dos Santos Sousa was pronounced dead upon arrival at hospital despite attempts to revive him.
Confirming the tragic loss, the Para Futsal Federation said in a statement: “It is with great sadness that we received the news of the passing of Antonio Edson dos Santos Sousa, an athlete who marked his career with dedication, talent, and team spirit.
“His presence will always be remembered on and off the court, not only for the exemplary player he was, but for the special person who captivated everyone.
“At this time of grief, we express our deepest condolences to his family, friends and the entire sporting community.
“May they find comfort in fond memories and in the certainty that Antonio Edson leaves behind a legacy of inspiration and passion for futsal.”
The incident occurred in the municipality of Augusto Correa in the northern Brazilian state of Para.
The tournament was one of a number celebrating Brazil’s independence from Portugal 200 years ago.
However, games were suspended the following day in response to the death.
While it is unclear what the official cause of Dos Santos Sousa’s death was, a similar event occurred in June, also in Brazil.
Roberto Peterson, who was just 33, passed away during a match in the southern state of Santa Catarina after being struck by a ball.
Futsal is an indoor five-a-side sport which sees balls struck at wicked speeds from close range.
Popular in South America and also Spain and Portugal, six time World Cup champions Brazil are also the holders, beating rivals Argentina in Uzbekistan in the 2024 edition of the FIFA event.
