James Ransone Movies He Worked on Before His Death at 46
Hollywood is mourning the death of actor James Ransone.
The Wire star died by suicide on December 19, 2025, according to County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner records viewed by Us Weekly. He was 46.
Shortly after news of his death was made public, Jamie McPhee — who married Ransone in 2017 before welcoming two children with the actor — broke her silence on social media.
“I told you I have loved you 1000 times before and I know I will love you again,” McPhee said in a statement via Instagram with a throwback photo with Ransone. “You told me — I need to be more like you and you need to be more like me — and you were so right. Thank you for giving me the greatest gifts – you, Jack and Violet. We are forever.”

“His wife, Jamie, known by her friends as Skipper, and their children, Jack and Violet, were the center of his world,” the page stated. “They loved him infinitely, and he loved them just as fiercely in return. Their bond was deep, joyful and unmistakable to anyone who witnessed it.”
While Ransone’s most notable gig in Hollywood may have been playing Chester “Ziggy” Sobotka in The Wire season 2 in 2003, he also had the opportunity to star in several successful movies.

‘The Black Phone’ and ‘Black Phone 2’
Ransone played a character named Max in 2021’s The Black Phone and 2025’s Black Phone 2, starring Mason Thames and Ethan Hawke.
The first installment centered on a 13-year-old boy named Finney (played by Thames) who was being held in a soundproof basement by a sadistic, masked killer. When a disconnected phone on the wall starts to ring, he soon discovers that he can hear the voices of the murderer’s previous victims.
In the sequel, Finn was 17 and struggling with life after his captivity. His sister began receiving calls in her dreams from an infamous black phone.
‘The Son of No One’

In the 2011 crime thriller, Ransone played Officer Thomas Prudenti in a film that followed a young cop (played by Channing Tatum) assigned to a precinct in the working class neighborhood where he grew up. Ultimately, an old secret threatened to destroy his life and his family.
‘Sinister’ and ‘Sinister 2’

The 2012 movie followed a controversial true-crime writer who finds a box of Super 8 home movies in his new home. The footage revealed that the murder case he is currently researching could be the work of an unknown serial killer. Ransone played a deputy.
As for the sequel, which came out three years later, a young mother and her twin sons moved into a rural house that’s marked for death. In this film, Ransone played an ex-deputy.
