Jon Jones’ comeback plans questioned by UFC legend after bold Dana White plea

Chael Sonnen doesn’t see why Jon Jones would return to the sport if he doesn’t intend on fighting Tom Aspinall.
The UFC CEO, Dana White, announced that Jones had retired back in June.
Although Jones reversed his decision just weeks later as the news came that White would be teaming up with US President, Donald Trump, to host a UFC card at the White House.
White originally said that he wanted Jones to headline the UFC‘s White House card in a heavyweight clash with the American’s long-term rival Aspinall, but he quickly changed his mind on the matter.
The UFC boss has since made it clear that he would trust Conor McGregor more to head up the historic card, but despite that Jones is doing everything he can in the hopes of changing his mind.
The former UFC title challenger who fought ‘Bones’ in 2013, Sonnen, has recently revealed his confusion towards his rival’s potential comeback.
On podcast Good Guy/Bad Guy, Sonnen explained: “If Jon says that he’s back and he was never injured, he was never ill… he just didn’t want to fight Tom Aspinall.
“That’s the part to me that’s a little bit weird. He’s playing this as though that retirement never happened as opposed to this is a comeback.
“If you’re coming back, what are you coming back for? What is it that you’re coming back to?”
There were reports that Jones had agreed to finally fight Aspinall, but had then gone back on his word.
Sonnen, for one, seems to have made it clear that he believes Jones is ducking a clash with the Briton.
Sharing his perspective on the matter, he said: “And is it just an open slate to admit anything? Anyone except that guy, that guy over there in England…
“Anybody but him.
“Is that how we’re supposed to interpret this?”
Despite it being unlikely that we see the rivals finally face-off, Jones has made his official return to the drug-testing pool.
Doing so has opened up the possibility that we may see him in the Octagon once again.
What are the chances of Jones fighting on the UFC White House card?
According to the Wall Street Journal, the event is now believed to be being held in June instead of on the initially planned date of July 4 2026.
Regardless of the date, White has promised that the event will feature the promotion’s best fighters.
The odds of a spot on the UFC card at the White House for Jones are ‘a billion to one’, although McGregor could still be in with a chance.
He would be coming back from a period of inactivity after suffering a broken leg when he met Dustin Poirier for their trilogy clash in 2021, but the Irishman is confident that he has earned a spot on the card.
Only time will tell now, as White is set to make announcements over the next few months.
