Liverpool sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle with record fee to take transfer spend past £400m

Liverpool have finally completed the signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle.
The forward, who will wear the no.9 jersey at Anfield, has joined the Premier League champions for a British transfer record of £125million to bring an end to a summer long saga that saw Isak’s relationship with the Magpies sour.
In joining Liverpool, he becomes the most expensive British signing, surpassing the £116m the Reds spent on Florian Wirtz earlier in the summer.
Isak’s signing also follows the arrivals of Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi and Giovanni Leoni, meaning the club’s spend in the transfer window is up to around £416m without add-on fees.
The move for Isak caps off a fine transfer window for the Reds, although they didn’t have it their own way on deadline day.
Marc Guehi’s move to Anfield collapsed at the final hurdle despite Liverpool agreeing a deal with Palace and the player completing a medical.
But Oliver Glasner’s threat to step down as Eagles boss led to Guehi’s move falling through at the 11th hour.
However, Liverpool will be delighted with the acquisition of Isak, who adds even more firepower to the team’s quality attack.
“I feel amazing,” Isak told Liverpool’s club media.
“It’s been a long journey to get here. But I’m super-happy to be a part of this team, this club and everything it stands for. It’s something I’m proud of and I’m really looking forward to it.
“I’m just happy it’s done and that I can get back to work. I’m looking forward to seeing my teammates and the fans, and getting back out there.”
“I think I have a lot to give, I think I have a lot to improve,” Isak added. “I’m a striker but I always want to give as much as possible to the team, mainly goals but much more than that as well.
Premier League's costliest players
With Isak's transfer confirmed, here are the top five most expensive Premier League signings, whose fees also include their add-ons...
- Florian Wirtz: Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool (£116m)
- Moises Caicedo: Brighton to Chelsea (£115m)
- Enzo Fernandez: Benfica to Chelsea (£107m)
- Declan Rice: West Ham to Arsenal (£105m)
- Jack Grealish: Aston Villa to Man City (£100m)
“I want to win everything. Yeah, [as simple as that].”
Meanwhile, Newcastle confirmed the sale of Isak with a short statement.
It read: “Newcastle United can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer fee.
“The Sweden international joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions.”
Isak joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad for £60m in 2022.
He scored 27 goals in 42 games last season, and netted in the Carabao Cup final win against Liverpool to end the club’s 56-year wait for a trophy.
Ugly exit
All’s well that ends well for Isak, but the way he conducted himself as he tried to force a move away became a huge talking point.
The 25-year-old was effectively on strike ever since he played no part in Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia.
He didn’t feature in any of the Magpies’ opening three matches of the 2025/26 season.
Earlier in August, Isak sent shockwaves across football with an explosive statement demanding to leave Newcastle, while also citing ‘broken promises’ from the club regarding a new contract.
The statement blindsided Newcastle, however, it ultimately had the desired effect with the north east club eventually softening their not-for-sale stance.
Late on Sunday, they decided they were willing to sell the player with a deal agreed with Liverpool agreed shortly after.
As mentioned, the move will set Liverpool back £125m but Newcastle could bank £130m with the difference to be made on the player’s side.
Isak could make his Liverpool debut when they face Burnley at Turf Moor on September 14.
