Mercedes-Benz Turns the Maybach Into a Recording Studio With “Crafted in a Mercedes”

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled “Crafted in a Mercedes”, a new concept that transforms the back seat of a Mercedes-Maybach into a professional-grade recording studio. Developed in collaboration with Dolby Laboratories and Universal Music Group, the system allows musicians and producers to compose, mix, and fine-tune tracks directly from the comfort of the car.

Debuting in Los Angeles, the concept was demonstrated by producers FINNEAS and Aron Forbes, who used the Maybach’s integrated Dolby Atmos sound system to mix music in real time. It’s the latest evolution of Mercedes’ long-running partnership with Dolby and Universal, which began with the “Approved in a Mercedes-Benz” program to ensure that songs mastered in Dolby Atmos sound exactly as intended inside Mercedes vehicles.

A Sound Studio on Wheels

“Crafted in a Mercedes” takes that concept further by turning the vehicle itself into part of the production process. The Maybach’s cabin acoustics were tuned to provide studio-quality sound balance, while Dolby Atmos processing delivers a 3D spatial audio field that enables creators to adjust vocals, instruments, and reverb as if they were in a professional control room.

Mercedes engineers even adapted the system’s microphone and input architecture to allow laptops and portable interfaces to plug directly into the Maybach’s onboard network. It’s an extension of the brand’s push to fuse technology, comfort, and artistry in its upper-tier models. The project complements other forward-looking experiments, which showcases how flexible research platforms can accelerate innovation beyond the conventional car.

Luxury, Technology, and Philosophy

While “Crafted in a Mercedes” focuses on creative expression, it also reflects the brand’s broader philosophy, merging sustainable progress with emotional appeal. The company recently reiterated its goal of a carbon-neutral lineup. Even as Mercedes champions electric and digital mobility, it’s keeping one foot grounded in craftsmanship, sound, and sensory experience, qualities that have long defined its appeal.

The aesthetic dimension also ties neatly into the design language seen in concept cars like the new Mercedes-Benz Vision Iconic, which pairs heritage-inspired styling with next-generation solar and battery technology. The same mindset, blending timeless form with advanced function, underpins the Maybach’s mobile studio concept.

Why It Matters

“Crafted in a Mercedes” is more than a one-off publicity experiment. It positions Mercedes-Benz as a creative enabler, not just a carmaker, and extends its luxury narrative into new cultural territory. By aligning the brand with music production and immersive audio, Mercedes is tapping into a younger generation of artists and listeners who view cars as connected spaces rather than static machines.

If Mercedes has its way, the future of in-car audio won’t just be about listening to music, it’ll be about making it.
