Mountain Ridge upsets Petersburg; Frankfort, Fort Hill roll; Moorefield, Hampshire lose
FROSTBURG — Trailing 5-0 in the bottom of the second inning, Mountain Ridge scored six runs to take the lead.
No. 4 Petersburg got within a run in the sixth, but the Miners (2-3) held on for an 8-7 upset win on Monday.
The Vikings (4-1) scored four runs in the top of the first off a Lacey Moyers double, an Ella Chew (Potomac State commit) walk and a groundout.
A Miley Tingler double made it 5-0 in the second before Mountain Ridge loaded the bases off two walks and a Brilee Bennett single.
Macy Barth drove both runners in on a double, then singles from Anne Baker, Madison Bowman and Juliana Burress put the Miners ahead 6-5.
Moyers singled in the top of the third to even the score.
Gabby Shingler singled to retake the lead in the bottom of the third, then Barth added a run in the fifth on a single to right.
A fielder’s choice in the sixth got the Vikings to within 8-7, but Petersburg stranded two runners to end the game.
Destinee Johnson earned the win, allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks.
Burress got a four-inning save, allowing a run on two hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
Barth led the Miners, going 3 for 4 with three RBIs and a stolen base.
Gracie Carpenter allowed two runs in 4 1/3 frames off six hits.
Moyers and Cheyenne Sites each had two hits for Petersburg.
The Miners host Southern (0-2) on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
Petersburg is at Moorefield (1-5) on Thursday at 6 p.m.
No. 5 Frankfort 16 Berkeley Springs 2
BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. — Frankfort combined for 11 hits and 11 walks in Monday’s four-inning rout of Berkeley Springs.
The Falcons (7-1) scored five runs in the first, six in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth.
Riley Lynch hit a two-run home run for Frankfort in the fourth inning and finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs.
Dayahna Imes earned the win, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
Frankfort is at Hampshire on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
Fort Hill 19 East Hardy 3
CUMBERLAND — Fort Hill’s 11-run bottom of the second led to a five-inning run rule of East Hardy on Monday at Washington Middle.
In the second inning, the Sentinels (3-2) had eight hits and two walks.
Haley Metz sent a two-run shot to left that put Fort Hill ahead 8-1.
Metz, Tatum Bishop (Frostburg State commit) and Taylor Wiseman had three hits while Nakiah Dunn and Brynnan Wigger (Allegany College commit) each had a pair.
Metz earned the win, allowing one earned run on two hits and five walks with 13 strikeouts.
Adyson Crider and Jaylynn Combs each had a hit for the Cougars (1-1).
East Hardy plays Pendleton County at home on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Fort Hill hosts Somerset on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Moorefield swept in pair of road games
STRASBURG, Va. — Moorefield dropped a pair of games on Monday, falling 12-1 at Strasburg, Virginia, and 4-2 against Lancaster.
Against Lancaster, the Yellow Jackets (1-5) led 2-1 entering the fifth inning before the Red Devils (8-1) scored four unanswered runs.
Brenna See led-off the top of the fourth and drilled the first pitch of the inning for a solo shot.
Annie Barr allowed one earned run on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts for Moorefield.
Addison George earned the win with two runs on two hits and two walks with seven strikeouts for Lancaster.
Against Strasburg, the Rams (4-1) scored nine runs in the bottom of the second.
Moorefield committed three errors in the frame that all led to runs.
Of Strasburg’s 12 runs, only three were earned against Moorefield’s pitching staff.
Chelsea Stine hit a two-run home run for Strasburg in the fourth.
The Yellow Jackets played at Tucker County on Tuesday and are at Berkeley Springs on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Elkins 21 Hampshire 2
ROMNEY, W.Va. — Elkins scored at least two runs in all five innings of Monday’s run-rule over Hampshire.
The Tigers (2-2) scored three runs in the first and second innings, six in the third, two in the fourth and seven in the fifth.
The Trojans (0-3) scored both of their runs in the third inning off singles by Charly Ashton and Payton Billmeyer.
Hampshire’s three pitchers combined to allow 21 earned runs off 10 hits and 21 walks.
The Trojans visited No. 2 Keyser (5-1) on Tuesday, and follow that with a home game against Frankfort on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
