NFL week 1 tips: Three picks for the first week of the new NFL season

The wait is almost over as the 2025 NFL season gets underway at Lincoln Financial Field in the early hours of Friday morning, as the reigning champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, prepare to host NFC East rivals the Dallas Cowboys.

All teams are looking to hit the ground running in the new season and here are three selections for Week 1 from the NFL, including a boosted price pick from the NFC East grudge match in South Philly.

Eagles to soar past Cowboys

The 2025 NFL season gets underway with a juicy rivalry from the NFC East, as the Eagles and Cowboys prepare to face off at the Linc.

After beating the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 at Super Bowl LIX, the Eagles begin their journey to try to retain the title for the first time in their history.

With head coach Nick Sirianni overseeing a talented roster that includes offensive superstars Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley, the Eagles will be determined to make a winning start and claim the bragging rights over rivals Dallas.

The Cowboys finished last season with a 7-10 record and lost both their games against the Eagles, 34-6 in Arlington and 41-7 in Philadelphia.

Philly with a -6.5 handicap and over 48.5 total points in the game would have landed in both those contests last season and there’s value to be had for the trend continuing on Friday.

Chargers can give Chiefs a shock

The Los Angeles Chargers will be hoping that their AFC West rivals, Kansas City Chiefs, suffer some sort of hangover following their Super Bowl defeat to the Eagles at the end of last season.

Blown away by Philly and with little answer on their own offense until the result was all but settled, it was a tough Super Bowl for quarterback Patrick Mahomes and company.

A tricky opener at SoFi Stadium awaits the Chiefs this season, against a Chargers side that has always put up a fight in this fixture, despite losing their last seven games against Kansas City.

The last meeting between the sides at Arrowhead Stadium last season saw the Chiefs win 19-17 and the Chargers with a +2.5 handicap on their own patch on Saturday appeals here.

Lions can show their claws

In one of the picks of the Week 1 games, the NFC North clash between the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions is a mouth-watering contest.

The Lions have lost offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to the Chicago Bears but this is still an excellent Detroit team.

Beating the Packers both home and away last season, the tables have turned in this rivalry that used to be extremely one-sided in Green Bay’s favour.

With the Packers winning just one of their last seven meetings with the Lions, Detroit are well priced for the victory at Lambeau Field on Sunday.
