Non-league team set English football record for the first of three times this season

Truro City set a new record for English football’s longest away trip against Carlisle on Saturday.

The Cornish side made the round trip of over 14 hours and 878 miles for their National League clash at Brunton Park.

Truro smashed the previous record, which was a 832-mile round trip for the Championship clash between Newcastle United and Plymouth Argyle in the 2009/10 season.

Unfortunately for the south west outfit however, their journey went unrewarded, as they were comfortably beaten 3-0 in Carlisle.

And remarkably, the mammoth trip won’t stay at the top of the history books for long.

That is because the Tinners still have two more away trips this season that are even longer.

Next month, Gateshead will make the epic 930-mile round pilgrimage to the Truro City Stadium – which will take nearly 15 hours.

They will also have to traipse themselves up to Hartlepool in November, which is a huge, 890-mile round effort – also breaking the current record.

Supporting the fifth-tier new boys certainly isn’t for the faint-hearted this season.

After winning promotion from the National League South in April, their supporters will have to get used to long away days.

In league games alone, Truro face 21 round trips of more than eight hours, including 12 of more than ten hours and three of more than 14.

And only the most die-hard fans were in Carlisle at 3pm, with 50 of them making it into the away end at Brunton Park.

But with no train leaving Cornwall early enough to get them there on time, this meant they either had to travel up on Friday night, or go by car or plane today.

Carlisle manager, former Manchester United hero Mark Hughes, had some sympathy for today’s opponents before kick-off, with his side finding themselves in a similar boat in the North East.

In his pre-match press conference, Hughes said: “It’s not going to be easy for them but, like ourselves – we’re used to travelling big distances – it becomes second nature in terms of the logistics of it.

“I’m sure they’ve got a clear play in terms of how they can best get up here in a timely fashion and in the right physical frame.

“We pride ourselves in terms of how we approach long-distance travel and at the moment that’s working for us.”

But Carlisle showed no mercy on the pitch, as a Luke Armstrong double and a goal from Regan Martyn Linney made sure Truro will head home with nothing to show for their efforts.

Truro had been hoping to make their huge trip worthwhile, as they looked to build on their recent run of form.

After becoming the first Cornish side to be promoted to the National League, they initially struggled, losing all of their opening five games.

But they steadied the ship with a 3-0 win over Boston United, before a draw at home to Aldershot last week.

Unfortunately for the Tinners though, they were unable to keep their unbeaten run up, leaving their supporters with little to celebrate on their long journey home from Carlisle.
