‘Null and void’ – fans slam ‘criminal’ omission as Premier League Hall of Fame nominations announced

Ryan Giggs has once again been snubbed by the Premier League Hall of Fame.

The Manchester United legend was left out of the 15-man shortlist of nominees announced on Monday.

Giggs has yet to be put forward for a place in the Hall of Fame since it was launched in 2021.

Instead, eight of his former United team-mates along with legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson have all been inducted.

Meanwhile, seven more Red Devils icons who played alongside Giggs were nominated this week.

His continued absence has caused United fans to criticise the Hall of Fame’s validity on social media.

Reacting to his latest snub, one supporter wrote: “Whole thing is null and void without Ryan Giggs.”

Another fan also commented: “Ryan Giggs, the most decorated player in Premier League history not (being) on here is criminal.”

Giggs spent his entire playing career at Old Trafford after progressing through United’s academy.

He would also feature in their first-ever Premier League match in August 1992 aged just 18.

Across the next 22 seasons, Giggs made 632 appearances in the competition, the third-highest of any player.

Only Gareth Barry and James Milner have played more times in the Premier League.

In those matches, he scored 108 goals and provided a record 167 assists.

His feat of scoring in 21 consecutive Premier League seasons has also been unmatched by any other player.

By the time Giggs retired in 2014 aged 40, he had a record 13 Premier League titles to his name.

He was also named in the PFA Team of the Year six times as well as twice winning the PFA Young Player of the Year earlier in his career.

Giggs was finally voted the PFA Players’ Player of the Year in 2009 after helping United win their third title in a row and his 11th with the club.

After hanging up his boots, the Welshman remained at United as an assistant manager to Louis van Gaal during his tenure.

He would later spend four years in charge of Wales between 2018 and 2022, qualifying for their first World Cup for 64 years.

However, Giggs stepped down from his role prior to the tournament in Qatar prior to a trial on charges of allegedly causing actual bodily harm and coercive and controlling behaviour.

A jury was unable to reach a verdict before the 51-year-old was cleared the following year when the Crown Prosecution Service withdrew charges prior to the scheduled retrial.

Giggs is currently the sporting director at League Two side Salford City, a role he has held since February 2024.

He is no longer a co-owner, though, following a takeover by an ownership group including David Beckham and Gary Neville.

The pair completed their purchase of the club, who they had previously owned alongside Giggs, in May.
