One of 2025's Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movies Is Coming to Streaming

2025 had its fair share of box office disappointments, but one of the most surprising was Edgar Wright’s sci-fi movie The Running Man.

Like the 1987 original film with Arnold Schwarzenegger, this massively entertaining remake adapts Stephen King’s classic 1982 dystopian novel of the same name.

Set in the near future, The Running Man stars Glen Powell as Ben Richards, a working-class everyman who enters a deadly competition show to earn some cash to help his sick daughter. With the odds stacked against him, Ben will have to use all of his wits to survive.

While it didn’t set the box office on fire, The Running Man is destined to become a cult classic once it hits streaming. But when will that happen? Watch With Us has all the answers below.

When and Where Is ‘The Running Man’ Streaming?

You won’t have to wait long to stream The Running Man. The action movie will start streaming on January 13 on Paramount+.

Paramount+ is home to loads of hit movies like Top Gun: Maverick, Interstellar, World War Z, Gladiator and more. There are plenty of hit TV shows too, like Landman starring Billy Bob Thornton, NCIS, Ghosts, Fire Country, South Park and more.

Here’s the official synopsis for the 2025 version of The Running Man:

The Running Man takes place in a near-but-bleak future in which the United States is governed by an authoritarian media conglomerate. Ben Richards (Glen Powell) is a blacklisted laborer in desperate need of money for his daughter’s medication. When the only option left is to participate in The Running Man, a popular TV program that follows contestants as they try to avoid being murdered in a nationwide manhunt with the hopes of winning the show’s billion-dollar prize, Ben must do whatever it takes to keep himself, and thus his daughter, alive.”

In addition to Glen Powell, The Running Man features an of the entertainment industry’s best actors. Two-time Oscar nominee Colman Domingo stars as Bobby T. Thompson, the outrageous host of The Running Man TV show that Ben competes on. Josh Brolin plays the show’s mysterious producer, while Lee Pace plays the dangerous leader of the show’s assassins, Evan McCone.

Other cast members include Michael Cera (yes, really), Emilia Jones, William H. Macy, Daniel Ezra, Jayme Lawson, Will & Grace’s Sean Hayes and Love Lies Bleeding’s Katy O’Brian.

Should You Watch ‘The Running Man’?

Yes. 2025’s The Running Man is the rare remake that improves on the original in almost every way. (Sorry, Arnold.) This version is more action-packed, with some genuinely thrilling set pieces that surpass anything in the ‘87 film. More importantly, Glen Powell is more believable as a blue-collar hero who is desperate enough to enter a competition where he has almost no chance of winning. There’s more at stake with Powell, which makes everything he does all the more impactful.

The supporting cast is superb, with Colman Domingo having a ball as the showy host who loves an audience. Josh Brolin and Lee Pace are appropriately intimidating, while Katy O’Brian makes the most of her small role as one of Ben’s competitors. Props should also be given to Michael Cera, who almost steals the movie as — well, the less said, the better.

Plus, this Running Man gave the world a completely gratuitous scene of a wet Glen Powell running around in a towel. Thank you, Edgar Wright!

If you have a Paramount+ subscription, then you should sprint (get it?) to stream The Running Man. And if you don’t, well, Paramount+ is one of the cheapest streamers around, so it won’t cost much for you to sign up and enjoy everything The Running Man has to offer. You get a lot for your money, including one of 2025’s most underrated sci-fi movies.

Stream The Running Man on Paramount+ starting January 13.
