As is tradition, defending Super Bowl champions the Philadelphia Eagles will kick off the new NFL season with the Thursday night game on the opening weekend of the campaign, this time taking on fierce rivals the Dallas Cowboys in a blockbuster opening fixture in the NFC East.

Nick Sirianni’s side, boasting one of the most balanced and formidable rosters, will be looking to ride the momentum of their Super Bowl winning campaign, which saw them go 14-3 in regular season and saw them become the first time since themselves in 2017 to score 40+ points in a Super Bowl.

The Eagles have gone 2-1 in their pre-season fixtures, with wins over Cincinnati and the Jets either side of a low scoring defeat to Cleveland.

The Eagles’ attack is led by Jalen Hurts at quarterback and running back Saquon Barkley, who last year broke the record for most rushing yards in a season in NFL history on his way to be crowned Offensive Player of the Year, scoring 20 touchdowns in as many games in the process.

The Dallas Cowboys are entering their first season under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer, who will be looking to improve on last season’s record of 7-10 and bit a return to the play-offs after a one year absence.

The Cowboys will still be licking their wounds from the departure of Micah Parsons, arguably the best defender the league, to the Green Bay Packers to make him the highest paid non quarterback in NFL history, which has left their defence looking vulnerable.

The addition of George Pickens at wide receiver to partner up with CeeDee Lamb offers optimism for the Cowboys in attack along with quarter back Dak Prescott, who has now returned from injury, but their run defence was targeted heavily last year and will be cause for concern against the likes of Barkley on Thursday night.

The Eagles won heavily both times the two sides met last season, winning by 34-6 and 41-7 scorelines, and Sirianni’s side will be looking to put on a similar show in front of their home fans on Thursday night against Schottenheimer’s fragile looking Cowboys side in the latest edition of one of the NFL’s most acrimonious rivalries.
