Porsche's New Weissach Legend Is Coming September 7

The next iteration of the current generation Porsche 911 is on the way, set to be shown a week tomorrow, on September 7. The new model was shown today in a teaser via Instagram, pulling away under a hard launch. Predictably, it sounds decidedly like a 911, but there's also a hint of something else in that exhaust note.

Porsche has quite a few prototypes under development over in Germany at the moment, from its potential Flaschbau (Slantnose) revival to the upcoming GT2 RS. This car, in fairness, could be any one of those. But in all likelihood, Occam's Razor holds true. There isn't a new 911 Turbo yet, and that car in the teaser sounds turbocharged.

See, Porsche likes to trickle out various trims and iterations of its most current 911 over a few years, and the 911 Turbo is next in line. We just got new 911 Carrera 4 options, in coupe, cabrio, and targa triplicate. Based on the teaser, the Turbo could be next.

What To Expect From The New Porsche 911 Turbo

The facelifted 911 Turbo should bring to bear most of the updates we've seen with lesser 911s. Inside, that means new infotainment capabilities in the center display as well as Dolby Atmos surround sound. There's a new app center too, which features Amazon's Alexa voice assistant and some under-the-hood changes to make the whole thing a little snappier.

Mechanically, the 911 Turbo and Turbo S may inherit the 4S model's Porsche Traction Management. It's a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system which utilizes a water-cooled front differential and an electromagnetically controlled clutch. Of course, these models will be the most potent 911s before you get to the GT cars, which means two turbos and lots of power in addition to all-wheel drive and larger brakes. There may also be some degree of hybridization. We'll know more when Porsche pulls the cover off whatever it's been working on come September 7.
