REPORT: Tennessee Expected To Hire Anthony Poindexter

Safeties coach and co-defensive coordinator Anthony Poindexter is off to Tennessee to be the Volunteers’ next defensive backs coach:

Poindexter was hired in 2021 and turned a struggling safety room into one of the nation’s best. Four safeties who played for him at Penn State are on active NFL rosters today (Jaquan Brisker, Ji’Ayir Brown, Jaylen Reed, KJ Winston). Penn State’s defense finished in the top 10 of FPI’s defensive efficiency metric in each of Poindexter’s first four seasons in State College after finishing outside the top 10 in the previous six seasons.

Deon Broomfield, who coached the safeties at Iowa State during the same time frame (2021-2025), is the presumptive successor. Broomfield joined Penn State’s staff in December as a defensive backs coach.
