‘Such a dream’ – Amanda Anisimova exorcises Wimbledon demons with emotional US Open win over Iga Swiatek

Amanda Anisimova gained revenge over Iga Swiatek for her Wimbledon final defeat with a stunning victory in the US Open quarter-finals.

Less than two months after suffering a humiliating 6-0, 6-0 defeat to the Polish star at the All England Club, Anisimova got her own back in Flushing Meadows with a 6-4 6-3 victory.

The US star was left in tears in SW19 when she became the first person in the Open era at Wimbledon to lose a Grand Slam final without winning a game.

But there were no tears this time around, as Anisimova showcased the best of her ability to get past second seed Swiatek in Flushing Meadows.

After falling a break down in her opening game, fans may have been left fearing the worst for the home favourite.

But there was to be no repeat of her last Grand Slam heartache, as Anismova fought back to claim the first set, before sealing her straight sets victory.

And she couldn’t hide her delight in her on-court interview afterwards.

Anismova reflected: “Playing here is so freakin’ special… this has been such a dream.

“To come back from Wimbledon like that is really special for me. I feel I worked so hard to turn around from that.

“Today means everything to me. I can do it, this is so special.

“It was such a fun match, I know it wasn’t three sets but it was such a battle for me.”

Victory for Anisimova means she will now play in the semi-finals in New York for the first time in her career.

She will now face either Karolina Muchova or two-time former champion Naomi Osaka in the final four on Thursday night.

The pair will do battle next in the Arthur Ashe Stadium, while the other US Open semi-final clash is already decided.

World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka will play another US star, Jessica Pegula, which means there is still a chance of an all-American final on Sunday afternoon.

If Anisimova makes it past either Muchova or Osaka, it will mark back-to-back Grand Slam finals for the 24-year-old.

And she will surely be feeling much more confident of her chances this time around, after banishing her Wimbledon demons against Swiatek.

The New Jersey native has previously tasted glory at the US Open, winning the Junior title as a 16-year-old back in 2017.

It’s fair to say Anisimova has overcome her fair share of struggle since then, suffering personal tragedy in 2019 when her father died suddenly.

The star then took a break from tennis in 2023, citing burnout and concerns over her mental health.

But after battling back this year to reach a career-high WTA ranking of world No.7, Anisimova is now looking to round off her latest comeback with a first Grand Slam title.

Victory in New York would make her the third different American woman this year to win a major, after Madison Keys clinched the Australian Open and Coco Gauff‘s French Open triumph in June.
