Texas A&M lands commitment from Houston Christian transfer linebacker

Texas A&M added another versatile athlete to its 2026 linebacking corps, as Houston Christian linebacker TJ Smith announced his commitment to the Aggies.

Smith is an incoming junior who is expected to have two years of collegiate eligibility left after transferring to play for third-year head coach Mike Elko. He is also the older brother of Texas A&M's 2027 defensive lineman commit Myels Smith. The 6-foot-1, 235-pounder from Los Angeles, California, played in 10 games for the Huskies as a true freshman, notching eight tackles and one pass breakup. In 2025, Smith displayed much improvement from a production standpoint, recording 39 total tackles, including two tackles for loss.

The California native joins Tulsa linebacker Ray Coney as the only new Aggie linebackers in the 2026 transfer class so far.

Smith was rated as a three-star prospect out of Cathedral High School, securing 211 tackles, five tackles for loss and eight sacks before signing with Houston Christian. He officially entered the transfer portal on Jan. 5 and will now compete in the Maroon and White next season. If he remains in College Station, the Smith brothers could be playing together for the Aggies in 2027.

At this time, Smith's commitment to Texas A&M marks the 16th scholarship transfer of the offseason. The Aggies have also seen 12 players enter the transfer portal to find their new respective destinations. With just four days remaining before the 15-day portal window officially closes, Elko and company have secured many integral pieces, like Smith, who will look to contribute at Kyle Field in 2026.
