Toyota's FJ Cruiser Reportedly Returning Sooner Than Expected

The FJ Cruiser is undoubtedly one of those Toyotas that left a lasting impression. Its retro styling, off-road capability, and rugged simplicity helped it gain a following from the mid-2000s until its final year in 2022. Even after production ended, demand for used examples stayed strong, and talk of a revival never really stopped. Over the years, Toyota has teased the world with concept vehicles that hinted at a successor. Those rumors have now gained traction again – this time with clearer details and a much shorter wait.

Recent reports from Japan claim that the FJ’s comeback is finally happening. Even better, it will be revealed sooner than expected, with Toyota reportedly preparing to showcase the new SUV in just a few days’ time.

The Big Reveal Comes Early

According to a new report from Japanese publication Mag-X, Toyota will preview the Land Cruiser FJ at an exclusive Japan Mobility Show Prologue event on October 20, 2025, a day before the main show opens. A global premiere will follow the next day. The model won’t appear at Toyota’s main JMS booth, though.

Positioned as the youngest member of the Land Cruiser family, the new FJ is said to bring back the classic boxy silhouette that made the original a hit. While Toyota hasn’t directly linked it to the old FJ Cruiser, the name and design cues make the connection clear. The model is expected to be built in Thailand, with its Japanese launch set for mid-2026.

What We Know So Far

Earlier reports revealed that the FJ will likely sit on Toyota’s IMV-0 ladder-frame platform, which also underpins the Hilux Champ. This chassis allows flexibility for internal-combustion, hybrid, or even electric powertrains, though the first version will reportedly start simple – with a 2.7-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder gasoline engine, the same one found in the Land Cruiser 250 sold outside the US.

While details remain unconfirmed, this setup suggests Toyota is aiming for a rugged yet practical entry-level off-roader. The upcoming FJ could fill the gap between the compact crossover segment and the larger, pricier Land Cruiser 250, offering an affordable way for new buyers to enter the Land Cruiser world. For enthusiasts, it’s more than just another SUV – it’s the possible rebirth of an icon.
