President Donald Trump targeted Minnesota long before the fatal ICE shooting, Reuters reports. “Months before a U.S. immigration agent fatally shot a motorist in Minnesota on Wednesday, President Donald Trump had fixated on the state, repeatedly criticizing its Democratic leaders and the large Somali American community there. … The shooting, which inflamed the already charged political climate and sparked protests, unfolded against a backdrop of what political analysts describe as mounting animus toward a state led by Walz, whose conflict with the president traces to the unrest that followed George Floyd’s killing by a Minneapolis police officer in 2020 during Trump’s first term.” 

“School leaders in districts around the Twin Cities said immigration enforcement actions are deeply affecting their students, staff and families,” according to MPR News. “Several district leaders said they or their staff members had encountered masked people in unmarked vehicles tailing, following and targeting their staff, students and families. The assumption is that these people are immigration enforcement officers, but it’s hard to tell because they are not in visibly marked uniforms.” Several districts have moved to hybrid learning environments or closed altogether. 

State educators are calling for ICE to stay out of schools, according to KSTP. “Speakers from Education Minnesota and union leaders from schools across the state called on ICE to stay away from schools during a news conference Friday morning.”

On its live blog, the Minnesota Star Tribune reports that “Minnesota leaders announced today an investigation into the fatal shooting of Renee Good by ICE agent Jonathan Ross earlier this week in Minneapolis.
