Two Xavier men's basketball walk-ons surprised with scholarships
Xavier men's basketball announced that a pair of fourth-year walk-ons have been put on scholarship.
Forward Ian Sabourin and guard Michael Wolf both walked onto the Xaiver basketball team prior to the 2022-23 season.
They found out about the scholarships prior to practice at Cintas Center on Monday, Jan. 12.
Xaiver head coach Richard Pitino posted the reveal on social media Monday night.
Never been a fan of the staged videos. Told my assistant Peyton no cameras but of course she had to capture. Happy she did! Ian and Michael truly deserve this. Happy for them. See everyone Wednesday! pic.twitter.com/N8UlgqfbnN— Richard Pitino (@XUCoachPitino) January 12, 2026
Sabourin played for Pat Kreke at Badin High School in Hamilton.
He averaged 6.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.3 blocks and 1.3 steals per game as a senior in 2022. Wolf was an All-State guard at Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colorado in 2021.
Sabourin has appeared in 11 career games in four seasons and has made all four of his career field goal attempts. He knocked down 3-pointers this season in Xavier's wins over Missouri State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Wolf has appeared in seven career games.
"These are guys I had nothing to do with. There's a culture there that is phenomenal," Pitino said after the win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Nov. 28. "They make us better every day in practice... They are selfless. They’ll play on defense for 20 minutes and they won’t complain. They take it seriously. That’s the best thing. I didn’t inherit much, but that’s by far the best thing I inherited.”
