USMNT loses key striker to devastating injury ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup

The United States Men’s National Team will head into the 2026 FIFA World Cup without one of its rising strikers. Patrick Agyemang, a 25-year-old striker, was ruled out after tearing his Achilles tendon during Derby County’s 2-0 win over Stoke City on Monday.

The Championship club confirmed the news Tuesday, and Agyemang left the field on a stretcher. The injury comes at a brutal time for both the soccer player and program.

USMNT loses Patrick Agyemang before World Cup

Agyemang scored six goals in 14 international appearances since debuting last year, including one during last month’s friendlies. Those matches didn’t go well for the USMNT, though.

Mauricio Pochettino’s squad dropped 5-2 to Belgium and 2-0 to Portugal, raising questions about where the team stands heading into the tournament.

“The club will provide Patrick with the highest level of medical care and rehabilitation throughout his recovery. As a result of this injury, Patrick will unfortunately miss this summer’s FIFA World Cup. At this stage it would be wrong to put a timeline on his recovery,” the club’s statement read.United States forward Patrick Agyemang against Mexico defender Cesar Montes

Agyemang sat third among U.S. center-forwards a year ago, behind Folarin Balogun and Ricardo Pepi. He transferred from Charlotte FC to Derby County and turned into the club’s top scorer with ten goals.

Pochettino now faces a May 30 deadline to finalize his World Cup roster. The USMNT will co-host the tournament alongside Canada and Mexico and draws Paraguay, Australia, and Turkey in Group D.

Losing Agyemang shifts the striker rotation and forces Pochettino to lean harder on his remaining options up front. The optimism around the team took a hit, but the tournament preparation continues.
