What’s the latest on Brock Purdy’s injury? Update on 49ers star’s Week 2 status vs Saints

The San Francisco 49ers might already need to hit the reset button.
Brock Purdy‘s status for a Week 2 game against the New Orleans Saints has suddenly been called into question.
What’s the latest on Brock Purdy’s injury?
“Brock Purdy has a left shoulder and toe injury that make him uncertain for Sunday’s game in New Orleans,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted.
“Kyle Shanahan said the team will see how the practice week goes. If Purdy cannot play, 49ers backup QB Mac Jones would be in line to start.”
What happens if Purdy can’t play vs Saints?
Jones is a former No. 15 overall pick of the New England Patriots, and went 10-7 during his rookie year while playing under head coach Bill Belichick.
But the Alabama quarterback quickly lost his job in New England, and Jones is 20-29 as a pro starter while playing for the Patriots and Jacksonville Jaguars.
Purdy received a massive five-year, $265 million contract extension last offseason, and some critics insisted that the 49ers had overpaid Mr. Irrelevant.
The final pick (No. 262 overall) of the 2022 draft has come a long way since his Iowa State days.
But the 6ft 1in and 220lb QB still faces doubters, and his latest injuries are an early setback for a team trying to move past a disappointing 6-11 record last year.
49ers fans are worrying about a curse
“I don’t believe in curses, but if I did it would be because of the 49ers,” one fan tweeted.
“Someone has a 49ers voodoo doll somewhere,” a second fan posted.
“Mac Jones vs Spencer Rattler MUST SEE TV,” a third fan wrote.
Those jokes followed the news that Purdy isn’t the only 49er dealing with an injury after a tough 17-13 road victory over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1.
George Kittle, a six-time Pro Bowl tight end, could miss three-to-five weeks with a hamstring injury.
Jauan Jennings is also dealing with a shoulder injury, while running back Christian McCaffrey was a question mark before kickoff against the Seahawks.
Purdy presents problems for Shanahan
But Purdy’s injury is the biggest problem for the 49ers, since he soaks up their salary cap and must play like a top-10 QB for San Francisco to have a shot of playing in Super Bowl LX in the team’s home stadium.
“If he (Jones) has to go this week, he’ll lead the guys. The guys will believe in him and I know he’ll do his job at a high level,” San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said.
Adding another QB is also an option for the 49ers, who list Kurtis Rourke at No. 3 on their depth chart.
