Where Is 'Murder in a Small Town' Filmed? Show's Location Explained

Murder in a Small Town has many of Us wondering how so many dead bodies can appear in one place — but is the town a real place?

Based on novels written by L.R. Wright, Murder in a Small Town follows a police chief named Karl (Rossif Sutherland) who — along with the help of others, including his girlfriend, Cassandra (Kristin Kreuk) — investigates mysterious murders.

The Fox series, which debuted in 2024, is filmed at Gibsons on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast. Murder in a Small Town is based on the same location — with season 2 expanding Karl’s turf as police chief to explain all the crime.

“They tried to address that – the plausibility of all that — by expanding his territory. Ultimately I don’t know how far you can expand his territory before he’s tasked with arresting whales,” Sutherland quipped exclusively to Us Weekly in November 2025. “It’s just the formula we have to go along with in order to tell our stories.”

He continued: “But ultimately even if some of the crimes feel a little far-fetched, I really do hope that it’s the love story that doesn’t feel far-fetched at all.”

Kreuk, meanwhile, opened up about finding something for Cassandra to do while Karl was out solving crime in town.

“For me it was finding something for Cassandra to do that is interesting — in contrast to a murder. Because a murder is a pressing thing. There’s a lot of energy that goes into solving those things,” she explained to Us in September 2025. “That is really the request [for me] is to find something for the two of them — and also selfishly for me — to do that is Cassandra driving a story.”

What Is the Backstory of the Town on the Show?

Before the events of the series premiere, Karl moved to Gibsons and accepted a new job after previously being a police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His move allowed him to cross paths with Cassandra, who became his love interest and local librarian.

In addition to Sutherland and Kreuk, Murder in a Small Town stars Aaron Douglas, Savonna Spracklin, Bethany Brown and Marcia Gay Harden.

Is Gibsons a Real Place?

Murder in a Small Town is filmed in Gibsons, British Columbia, which is part of Canada. The series has relied on local landmarks in Gibsons — including Gibsons Harbor — to provide authenticity to Murder in a Small Town.

What Locations Are Used on the Show?

Gibson’s Public Library is used for Cassandra’s place of work, with real librarians appearing in the background of the show. There is also Molly’s Reach Diner, which is the place where Karl and Cassandra have their first date but has since become a mainstay on the show.

Robert’s Creek is often used in scenes near the water and the High Beam Dreams Event Center has allowed for moments such as Cassandra’s prom-themed high school reunion when it isn’t used as a wedding venue off screen.
