Margot Robbie and husband Tom Ackerley have a love story lifted straight out of a romance movie script.

The Barbie actress and her producer husband first met in 2013, and she’s been gushing over their deep connection ever since.

“Being married is actually the most fun ever,” Robbie told PORTER in November 2018. “Life got way more fun somehow. I have a responsibility being someone’s wife, I want to be better.”

Robbie explained that although she and Ackerley were often busy with their Hollywood projects, they still carved out time to see each other as much as possible.

“Even if we both have to fly to a country in between where we both are for one night, we’ll do it and then fly back to work the next day,” she said at the time. “And we speak all day every day on the phone.”

How Did Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerley Meet?

The couple met in 2013 during production of the World War II drama Suite Française. Ackerley was working as third assistant director on the film, while Robbie portrayed the character Celine alongside Michelle Williams, Kristin Scott Thomas, Matthias Schoenaerts, Sam Riley, Ruth Wilson and Lambert Wilson.

She and a group of assistant directors, including Ackerley, decided to move in together in London as they navigated their budding careers. Eventually, her romance with Ackerley blossomed in 2014.

“We kept it a secret. Because we weren’t really taking it seriously. ‘Oh, whatever, we’re just mates, we’re just mates.’ And then … everyone found out,” the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actress told The Guardian in February 2018 of the early days of their relationship.

While speaking with Vogue in May 2016, Robbie referred to Ackerley as “the best-looking guy in London” and recalled her single days.

“I was the ultimate single gal. The idea of relationships made me want to vomit,” she reflected. “And then this crept up on me. We were friends for so long. I was always in love with him, but I thought, ‘Oh, he would never love me back. Don’t make it weird, Margot. Don’t be stupid and tell him that you like him.’ And then it happened, and I was like, ‘Of course we’re together. This makes so much sense, the way nothing has ever made sense before.’”

Robbie and Ackerley wed in December 2016 in an intimate ceremony in Australia’s Byron Bay. They made their red carpet debut as a married couple at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival.

Ackerley is a producer and director with more than 20 credits to his name. In recent years, he served as executive producer of Netflix’s Sirens as well as the miniseries Mike.

Additionally, Ackerley and Robbie are part of the group who founded the production company LuckyChap Entertainment Limited. The company has backed critically acclaimed projects including I, Tonya, Birds of Prey, Barbie, Saltburn, Wuthering Heights, Dollface and Maid, many of which feature Robbie in a leading role.

“We can talk about work all the time. And then work feels like fun. And fun stuff can involve work,” Robbie told Vogue in June 2019 of working with her husband. “We just get along. I think it’s crazy that not all couples get along.”

The couple welcomed their first child together in November 2024. Robbie made a rare comment about parenthood the following year.
