Why Anthony Gordon is not playing for Newcastle against Wolves as England winger misses clash

Newcastle host Wolves this weekend as the post Alexander Isak-era gets underway but they will also be missing another star attacker.

The Magpies endured a frantic end to the transfer window with the arrivals of strike duo Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa.

The duo were brought in to help bolster the club’s attacking options following the departure of Callum Wilson this summer.

Newcastle also sanctioned Isak’s British transfer record sale to Liverpool on deadline day to finally bring an end to the summer-long saga.

With the Swede firmly in the rear-view mirror, Newcastle now set their sights on picking up a first victory of the season against Vitor Pereira’s men.

But while Woltemade and Wissa could feature, another man is out.

Is Anthony Gordon available for selection?

If Eddie Howe’s men are to pile more misery on struggling Wolves on Saturday then they will have to do it without winger Anthony Gordon.

The England international will serve the second game of a three-match ban having already missed the goalless draw at Leeds last month.

Gordon was shown a straight red card for his challenge on Virgil van Dijk in Newcastle’s 3-2 defeat to Liverpool on August 25.

The 24-year-old will be available for Newcastle’s Champions League opener against Barcelona next week but will miss the trip to Bournemouth on September 21.

His first league match following the suspension will come in the home clash with Arsenal at the end of September.

He will also be eligible to face Bradford City when the Magpies get their Carabao Cup defence underway later this month.

Gordon came under fire from Newcastle legend Alan Shearer for the challenge on Van Dijk that handed Liverpool a one-man advantage.

“What a stupid challenge man. It’s a red card all day,” Shearer wrote on X.

Meanwhile, Howe said: “He’s gone in full-bloodedly and probably was going in too quickly.

“I think he’s tried to stop his challenge and stop his momentum, but couldn’t in time. So I think it looks bad, but I don’t think there’s any intent or malice in there.

“I feel really sorry for Anthony because it’s the second time in quite quick succession. He got a red, but I think this one’s unlucky on his perspective.”

Newcastle vs Wolves: Date and how to follow

A new frontline

Gordon’s suspension is likely to make Howe’s team selection against Wolves a little easier to make.

Harvey Barnes is favourite to deputise on the left flank in Gordon’s absence with former Brentford ace Wissa in line to lead the attack.

Howe could be tempted to throw Woltemade into the mix for his first taste of Premier League action with the forward capable of playing anywhere across the frontline.

Summer signing Anthony Olanga remains in contention down the Magpies’ right side as does the usually reliable Jacob Murphy.

Can Wolves kickstart their season?

Wolves sit bottom of the table having lost all three of their opening Premier League games.

Pereira’s men were comfortably beaten 4-0 by Manchester City on the opening day before slipping to defeats at Bournemouth and at home to Everton.

The Midlands outfit will hope to get their season underway with a win at St James’ Park ahead of what is a busy period of domestic and European fixtures for Howe’s side.

Wolves are likely to field Jorgen Strand Larsen this weekend just weeks after turning down multiple offers from the Magpies for the striker.

Larsen revealed his intention to join Newcastle but his hopes of a move were quashed due to Wolves having no time to find a replacement before the deadline.
